All Natural Remedies for Warts

Warts and all

Dr. Wright has written before (in the 9/25/05 Question & Answer portion of the Health e-Tips) about the all-natural remedy for warts he often recommends to his patients -- duct tape. But if the duct tape just won't stay on your skin, there is another natural way to get rid of warts: garlic. A study in the International Journal of Dermatology reports that lipid garlic extract is an excellent treatment for warts, completely eliminating them within one to two weeks. And it also works for corns, too.

The study had 42 people use two different extracts of garlic for treatment of warts and corns. Five people applied a water extract of garlic and 23 others were given a lipid extract of garlic. Five other people applied a placebo solution to their affected areas. All groups applied their solutions twice a day.

The lipid garlic extract was able to completely remove warts within one to two weeks. It also removed 80 percent of all corns within two to three weeks. The water extract was less effective and those who applied a placebo showed no improvement.

A new vision

Q: I have just been diagnosed with glaucoma. What can I do to combat it?

JVW: Some individuals with a specific type of glaucoma called normal tension glaucoma have been helped by taking Ginkgo biloba. Normal tension glaucoma is a form of the disease in which the eye pressure is not elevated, but there is still damage to the optic nerve and retina. The herb seems to reverse some of the visual field damage that the disease causes with no side effects.

One reason glaucoma-induced blindness may occur is because of changes in the blood flow within the retina. A study in Taiwan examined Gingko biloba's effect on 25 patients with diabetic retinopathy and found that those who took the herb had a 10 percent increase in blood flow to the retinal capillaries.

Other studies have also found that Ginkgo can improve impaired circulation throughout the body.

What is...a corn vs. a wart?

A corn is a thickened area of skin on the foot that occurs from pressure and friction due to tight-fitting shoes or toe deformities. A wart is caused by a virus and often appears on the hands, fingers, or feet. Warts can appear either flat or raised, smooth or rough, and may or may not be reddish in color. Warts can be contagious to other people if they have breaks or cuts in their skin. Corns cannot be spread to other people.
