Our supplements and medical advice

Q: I've tried to get information about how my husband and I can use the supplements you've written about in your newsletter, but when I called the number printed in the issue, the person I spoke to said I would have to call your dispensary. When I called there, they told me I would have to contact the clinic. I really believe in you and have been reading your newsletter for years, but the runaround I've been getting is very frustrating. Please let me know what I should do.

JVW: I know it's frustrating, but there's a good reason for the experiences you've had: It's a strict policy at both the newsletter and the clinic Dispensary that representatives answering calls cannot dispense personal advice or recommendations to callers.

Most of the time, these representatives are not trained medical professionals, and it's not at all best for you or your husband to have recommendations made by non-medical personnel -- or even by medical personnel who don't know your individual health circumstances. Even if a small, seemingly unimportant detail about your health or medical history is left out, it opens the door for mistakes. And even though most mistakes with supplements are harmless enough, there's at least a small chance that it could result in a serious problem.

That's why I always make a point of recommending to my readers that they make an appointment with a physician skilled and knowledgeable in nutritional and natural medicine who can perform a thorough exam and gather a complete medical history before helping to determine the correct supplement regimen. A couple of good resources for locating such a physician in your area are the American College for Advancement in Medicine (800-532-3688;
www.acam.org) and the International College for Integrative Medicine (866-464-5226; www.icimed.com).
