Is deodorant safe?

Q: I appreciated your article the other day on how dairy products can contribute to body odor: I cut out dairy long ago and feel much healthier for it. But I'd rather keep on using my deodorant just to be on the safe side. I've heard some conflicting reports about the dangers of deodorant though. Can you tell me if it's safe to continue using it? Thanks!

JVW: I'm glad to hear that you've eliminated dairy products from your diet. They're often the primary culprits in a long list of health concerns. But as harmful as dairy products can be, certain deodorants can be just as dangerous. Many deodorants contain aluminum, which has been linked to serious brain diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's.

If you're concerned about body odor, but still want to use deodorant, you'd be better off switching to one that doesn't contain this potentially harmful substance. Check your local natural food store for some aluminum-free products.
