Warts n' all

Q: Are there any natural ways to cure herpes?

JVW: There are several alternative treatments to battle herpes. Diet plays an important role in outbreaks, so start by eliminating junk foods, refined sugar, and white flour, and get tested for any possible undiscovered food allergens that may be weakening your immune system. Also stop eating peanut butter and nuts, since they both contain considerable amounts of L-arginine, which promote herpes growth.

Once your immune system is strengthened and desensitized, you can gradually allow some of the eliminated foods, including nuts, back into your diet. But for now, in addition to dietary changes, supplement with vitamins and minerals to boost your overall immune function. Try 2 grams twice daily of lysine (taken between meals); 2 grams four times a day of vitamin C to fight infection; 250 micrograms twice daily of sodium selenite to inhibit viral reproduction; 5 milligrams of lithium three times daily along with one tablespoonful of flaxseed oil and 400 units of vitamin E.

Other nutrients that have infection fighting capabilities are zinc (30 milligrams of zinc picolinate twice daily) and vitamin A (50,000 units). A quality multi-vitamin is also a good idea.

This regimen should only be needed for the first few months. Once your diet improves and your immune system is stronger, your body should be able to fend off herpes outbreaks on its own.
