Mountains and molehills

Just when I'm sure that natural and nutritional medicine is doomed to remain underappreciated, underused, and underacknowledged by the mainstream, I always seem to come across a piece of news that rekindles my optimism. My glass shifted back to half-full recently when I came across an article titled "Cranberries show remarkable health benefits in studies."

The article itself was relatively ho-hum as far as natural health news goes: Most of the remarkable benefits it listed were things that those of us who have been following Dr. Wright's newsletter have known for years. For example, it talked about cranberries' antibacterial effects, which can help prevent everything from urinary tract infections to tooth decay.

While all of the information discussed in the article was certainly useful, and a good step in the right direction towards acceptance of natural therapies, it was WHERE the information came from that caught my eye: The Marucci Center for Blueberry and Cranberry Research at Rutgers University.

I had no idea there even was a center devoted solely to blueberry and cranberry research, let alone one at a major mainstream university. Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill here, but those of us fighting the good fight for natural medicine need all the molehills we can get.

Now, if we can just get the berry investigators at Rutgers to give those bacon-wielding researchers at Harvard a few pointers on how to conduct useful studies on food and nutrition...
