Lost in space Q: Almost every time I go to the mall I "lose" my car in the parking lot. It happens so often I'm starting to get worried that it might be a warning sign of Alzheimer's. Should I be concerned? If it's not that serious, is there anything I can do to improve my memory? JVW: This type of recall ability is technically referred to as "spatial memory," but it's more commonly known as "sense of direction." While it's always good to keep tabs on your memory and any problems you're experiencing, what you've described is most likely not Alzheimer's-related. And the good news is, it is possible to improve your spatial memory. In one study, published in 2001, researchers observed the ability of rats to navigate their way through mazes. They treated some of the rats with the mineral lithium and used the rest as a "control" group. The researchers found that lithium improved the rats' spatial memory in as little as 24 hours.
