Health benefits vs. insurance benefits

Q: I really want to start a bio-identical hormone replacement program, and my doctor is even willing to write me a prescription for the hormones. However, my insurance company won't cover them. I'm willing to pay out of pocket for the sorts of benefits you've said are associated with natural HRT, but I just thought other readers should be aware that insurance companies don't cover them.

JVW: Thank you for your letter and for letting other readers know about your struggle. Unfortunately, the battle with insurance companies isn't limited to bio-identical estrogens. Most insurance companies will refuse to cover any treatment that is not "approved" by a government agency -- no matter how safe, inexpensive, and effective it may be.

But, as you mentioned in your letter, the benefits that natural therapies offer are well worth the out-of-pocket price tag you may have to pay for them.
