Ringing in on tinnitus

Q: Please address the subject of tinnitus. My M.D. says he knows of nothing we can do. Your thoughts would be of great help.

JVW: Unfortunately, there is no 100-percent-effective cure for tinnitus. But there are a few things to try that often reduce ringing in the ears -- and occasionally eliminate it entirely. These include:

  • Ginkgo biloba, 80 milligrams of a standardized preparation, three times daily
  • Zinc (picolinate) 30 milligrams twice daily, "offset" with 2 milligrams copper, twice daily
  • Vitamin B12, 1,000 micrograms injected once or twice weekly, along with 5 milligrams of folic acid each time. (You'll need help from a physician skilled in natural therapies for this. To find one in your area, contact the American College for Advancement in Medicine at 800-532-3688 or www.acam.org.)

Some individuals have also found that acupuncture can help reduce tinnitus. While I can't promise that any of these things will be a sure-fire solution, they're all very safe and can help improve your health in other ways too.
