Glossed over

We've talked before about nutrients that can help your weight loss efforts. So maybe I should be glad that the mainstream has finally taken notice. But what they've done with the information amounts to little more than the next gimmick in a long line of failed products aimed at consumers looking for that ever-elusive quick fix. It's a new line of lip glosses promising to help you lose weight.

If it sounds a little far-fetched to you, you're not the only one. But the Too Faced cosmetics company and our stevia-spinning pal Coca Cola have teamed up to create these lip glosses based on some ingredients in the beverage giant's line of Fuze energy drinks.

Like the drinks, the lip glosses will contain an active ingredient known as Super Citrimax, which contains a widely used weight loss supplement called hydroxycitric acid. They'll also include chromium and L-carnitine, both of which have been supported in studies for their abilities to assist weight loss.

Of course, those studies didn't investigate whether or not topical applications of the nutrients would have the same effects, so I certainly wouldn't expect miracles from that layer of gloss.

But regardless of whether or not you choose to include weight loss support supplements - - in any form -- in your own efforts, it's important to keep in mind that none of it will make a difference if you're not following a healthy diet or exercising regularly. I know that advice is old news, and nowhere near as flashy as a weight-loss gloss, but there's a reason it keeps coming back to haunt you: Unlike all the gimmicks and products full of empty promises, it actually works.
