The health hint hiding in your hair

Q: I admit that this question is more of a vanity issue than a health issue, but it bothers me nonetheless: I've bought just about every expensive salon shampoo and conditioner and my hair just continues to be limp and dull. Are there any supplements that can help give it more life and body?

Dr. Wright: It may seem like a "vanity issue" but dull, lifeless hair is often a sign of an underlying nutrient deficiency (not a high-end shampoo deficiency), and that IS very much a health issue!

Your hair is likely trying to tell you that your body needs more essential fatty acids and possibly additional B-complex vitamins as well (especially vitamin B6).

You might want to consider taking 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily for several weeks. Taking 2 to 3 tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseed daily would be even better, though not quite as convenient. (And always remember to take 400 IU of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols when you take essential fatty acid supplements.) Including a B- complex supplement (that contains at least 50 milligrams of B6) each day is also a good idea.
