Not so sweet

Q: I read the question last week regarding using gymnema for diabetes. I haven't seen the previous issue the reader referred to, so I was wondering if you could tell me a little more about this herb and how it works?

Dr. Wright: Gymnema is an Ayurvedic herb that is also known as the "sugar destroyer." When Gymnema is applied to the mouth, it literally prevents the taste buds from perceiving sweet tastes. Gymnema is also a well-proven treatment for diabetes, and it has been used for this purpose for over 2,000 years.

Studies show that it may be able to help repair damage that has been done to the pancreas, as well as reduce the amount of insulin many diabetics need to maintain normal blood sugar levels. There is also research showing that it can reduce triglyceride levels and aid in weight loss.
