Herpes' helping hand

Q: A while back, you wrote an article on erectile dysfunction. Within that article you talk about supplementing with L-arginine. But you also state, and I quote, "However, if you have any form of herpes, you should consult your physician before supplementing with L-arginine." As I have been recommended to supplement with L-arginine I would really appreciate learning why you have given this warning.

Dr. Wright: L-arginine is a very valuable supplement for many purposes. However, people suffering from herpes should avoid it, or, as I mentioned in the article you read, consult their doctor before supplementing with it. The reason for this recommendation is that arginine encourages the growth of the herpes virus.
