Fruit fears

Q: I'm concerned about your comments on fructose. I don't have any problem giving up sweetened fruit juices or other products that contain high-fructose corn syrup. But I thought fructose was a natural sugar found in fruit. Is it safe to eat fruit?

Dr. Wright: When it's in its original form within a fruit, fructose is naturally accompanied by vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that make it good for you. The problem comes when fructose is refined, and taken out of its natural context within the fruit. When that happens, all you have is refined sugar -- without any of the "good" stuff that went with it in the fruit. Fruit is fine. Fructose, by itself, isn't.

So, don't worry -- you can, and should, still enjoy all the fresh (preferably organic) fruit you want!
