Herbal treatments for ADHD could keep kids off risky drugs Q: I was very disturbed when I heard my grandson’s pediatrician wants to prescribe an ADHD drug. Are there any other options I can tell my daughter about? Dr. Wright: While there isn’t a lot of research on herbal treatments for ADHD, there are some early clinical trials that show promise for two herbs. Pycnogenol, a standardized extract of French maritime pine park, significantly improved ADHD symptoms in children taking it over the course of a 4-week study. And another herb, Bacopa, significantly improved sentence repetition, logical memory, and learning after just 12 weeks. While behavior results weren’t clear in that study, Bacopa may be worthwhile even in children who don’t suffer from ADHD. |
